From April 24–25, 2025, over 100 participants gathered at Johannes Kepler University Linz for the 4th quantA Workshop, bringing together researchers from across Austria to exchange ideas, present research, and strengthen the quantum science network.
The workshop was officially opened by our Director of Research Gregor Weihs, followed by a warm welcome to Linz from our Director of Communication Richard Küng, who also gave an insightful introduction to the city, the university, and its role in advancing quantum research. Michaela Eder-Jahn, quantA’s Communication Manager, then shared highlights from current initiatives and projects, including activities around the upcoming International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025.
Two outstanding keynotes shaped the first day:
Sepp Hochreiter, a leading figure in neural networks and AI, delivered a bold and thought-provoking keynote on the limitations of current machine learning approaches and the potential role of quantum computing in uncovering hidden solutions.
Vedran Dunjko, working at the interface of quantum computing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, explored how quantum technologies and AI are increasingly connected.
Another major highlight was the quantA & atom:innen Women’s Lunch, providing an open and empowering space for women across the Austrian quantum community to connect, share experiences, and foster new collaborations.
The afternoon featured the first quantA Member Council Meeting, followed by a informative Training Session, where PhD students and postdocs received valuable input on advancing their scientific careers. This was followed by a vibrant Poster Session with around 50 posters showcasing a wide range of research topics.
The evening concluded at Zur Liesl, a traditional Linz brewery, where participants enjoyed a lively dinner. Between courses, Matthias C. Kettemann delivered an engaging After Dinner Talk on ethics and quantum technologies, raising essential questions about regulation, responsibility, and societal values in the age of quantum innovation.
The second day focused on new voices and fresh research. In the New Faces Session, inspiring talks were given by:
Michael Buchhold (Uni Köln, late 2025: University of Innsbruck)
Gláucia Murta (TU Wien)
Peter Asenbaum (IQOQI Vienna, Austrian Academy of Sciences)
Denitsa Baykusheva (Institute of Science and Technology Austria)
They presented their innovative research and highlighted the future directions of quantum science in Austria.
Parallel to the scientific program, the quantA administrative team also gathered in Linz. The admins — those who keep the cluster running behind the scenes — discussed key topics such as updates on cluster activities and administration, best practices, ongoing challenges, reporting and accounting procedures, and preparation for the upcoming audit. A dedicated Q&A session with the FWF as well as feedback and evaluation rounds ensured valuable exchange and planning for the future.
In the afternoon, participants took part in an impressive guided tour through Voestalpine, gaining insights into Austria’s cutting-edge industry and high-tech innovations.
Hosting the workshop in Linz was a true pleasure — and a great success.
quantA is proud to bring together such a strong, diverse, and motivated community that is collectively advancing Austria’s quantum science landscape.
We are already looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next quantA Workshop in Vienna!
