From entangled particles to everyday tech: Quantum insights with Gregor Weihs on Ö1

Gregor Weihs gave fascinating insights into the world of quantum science in the Ö1 program 'Punkt eins' and answered questions from listeners.

The program began by reflecting on the significance of the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025, which marks the 100th anniversary of the development of quantum mechanics. Weihs recounted how Heisenberg and Schrödinger, during separate vacations in 1925, laid the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics—achievements that have since revolutionized our understanding of matter and light.

Weihs emphasized that quantum science is far from abstract. It underpins essential technologies such as GPS, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and modern electronics. Quantum mechanics explains phenomena like sunlight and magnetism, things we take for granted today.

Quantum curiosity from listeners

During the live show, enthusiastic listeners called in with thought-provoking questions. Topics ranged from quantum entanglement to the randomness inherent in quantum processes. Weihs discussed how entangled photons remain mysteriously connected across vast distances and how randomness plays a key role in both quantum physics and technological innovation.

A harmony of science and art

A highlight of the program was an clip from the “Sound of Entanglement” project, a collaboration blending quantum science and music. During this performance, entangled photons randomly guided musical notes, creating a unique live composition. This innovative project was recently presented at the Vienna SciBall and premiered in the Mariendom in September 2024.

A glimpse into the future

Weihs also shared his vision for the future of quantum research in Austria. Through initiatives like the FWF-funded Cluster of Excellence Quantum Science Austria, he aims to foster collaboration across over 60 research groups nationwide. He stressed the importance of continued support for both fundamental research and technology transfer to maintain Austria’s leading role in the global quantum community.
