Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we take the opportunity to reflect on the importance of diversity and inclusivity in STEM fields, particularly in the area of quantum science and technology.
At Quantum Science Austria, we recognize that diversity is essential for scientific progress and innovation. Studies consistently show that diverse teams bring fresh perspectives and foster creativity, leading to breakthroughs that homogeneous groups may overlook. However, in the STEM disciplines, and especially in physics, women and other underrepresented groups continue to face barriers.
The Challenge in Numbers
Across Europe, only 26% of doctoral graduates in physical sciences are women (Eurostat, 2019). In Austria, the gender gap is evident throughout the academic career pipeline: while women may still outnumber men at the undergraduate level in some fields, their representation declines sharply in advanced academic roles. This imbalance underscores the urgent need to create supportive environments where women and girls can thrive in science.
A Platform for Empowerment: atom*innen.at
To address these challenges in quantum physics, Francesca Ferlaino, a renowned quantum physicist at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI), has launched atom*innen.at.
This initiative serves as a network and community for women in quantum science. Through mentoring, networking opportunities, and training sessions, atom*innen.at aims to create an inclusive space where female researchers can connect, share experiences, and find inspiration. The platform also highlights female role models in science to challenge stereotypes and motivate the next generation of scientists.
Ferlaino's vision, shared by her colleagues and supported by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, is clear: a more inclusive quantum research community will drive innovation and attract diverse talent.
Upcoming Event: Diversity in STEM at the University of Vienna
As part of the broader effort to foster diversity across all scientific disciplines, we are pleased to share an exciting event hosted by the University of Vienna:
? Date: February 18, 2025
? Location: Main Ceremonial Hall, University of Vienna
This full-day event, titled “Embracing Diversity in STEM", will feature leading researchers discussing the importance of diversity in science. The program includes perspectives on the challenges faced by underrepresented groups and strategies to build more inclusive academic environments.
Speakers include:
- Prof. Anna Danielsson (Stockholm University)
- Prof. Chi Zhang (Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics)
- Prof. Mathea Sophia Galanski (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry)
- Dr. Shantanu Dave (Faculty of Mathematics)
- Prof. Nergis Mavalvala (MIT, School of Science)
