The UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 has begun, and one of its highlights in Austria was the visit of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Anton Zeilinger to Johannes Kepler University Linz. On January 30, 2025, Zeilinger delivered his lecture, "A Journey Through the Wonderful World of Quantum Physics," to a packed audience of over 1,000 students, researchers, and science enthusiasts, with hundreds more following via livestream.
Physics, curiosity, and the role of mistakes
Reflecting on the evolution of quantum mechanics, Zeilinger stated:
“Physics describes what can be said, but it describes everything that can be in the world. There is nothing beyond that.”
He encouraged students to embrace curiosity and perseverance, emphasizing that even mistakes are part of the journey:
“If you have an idea, it's important to pursue it with enthusiasm - even if mistakes happen.”
A return to JKU Linz
For Zeilinger, this event was a return to familiar grounds—he previously taught at JKU Linz over 30 years ago, covering topics such as quantum physics and the risks of nuclear weapons.
His talk spanned a century of quantum discoveries, tracing the journey from the early formulations of quantum mechanics to modern applications in quantum computing, cryptography, and beyond.
Austria’s quantum future
Austria has a long-standing tradition of groundbreaking quantum research, and JKU Linz is a key contributor—both as a partner in Quantum Science Austria (quantA) and through its leading research in quantum computing, materials, and technologies.
Zeilinger’s visit serves as a powerful inspiration for young minds and a fitting launch for IYQ2025, reinforcing Austria’s role in the future of quantum science.
