Training

Quantum Science Austria

About our Training Unit

QuantA’s training program aims to provide novel concepts and approaches for a broad education in quantum science at all levels, from bachelor’s to master’s and PhD studies to the formation of junior research-group leaders.

The value chain from science to technology to business and commercial success is driven by talented individuals. Finding them, educating them and giving them the opportunity and space to develop and grow is a central objective of quantA’s training program.

QuantA’s training program is built on three pillars. Common to all pillars is the support of young researchers and the fostering of a community. This begins with attracting young talent both nationally and internationally and is complemented by the overarching goal to increase diversity.

Modernizing curricula

We are updating fundamental courses in modern physics, quantum mechanics, and related fields, with a focus on fostering quantum thinking. At the master’s level, we offer advanced lectures that match cutting edge quantum research, such as quantum information, quantum optics or quantum field theory.

Developing teaching tools

We are developing innovative resources such as scripts, animations, interactive questionnaires, and tailored laboratory experiments (e.g., verifying Bell’s inequalities).

Collaborative learning

We are implementing seminar formats that involve discussion of seminal papers and cutting-edge research themes across disciplines.

Cross-institution accessibility

We are sharing courses between different Austrian universities and institutes, enabling wider access to specialized training through in-person and virtual formats.

Community building

We are establishing discussion forums to engage students and promote collaborative learning in quantum science.

Soft skills development

We are integrating training in communication, presentation, and research skills to prepare students for academic and industry careers.

Comprehensive support

We provide resources to enable doctoral candidates to excel in research and to support personal development and career planning. We are building a support network for the PhD candidates, with a special focus on mental health and well-being.

Internationally competitive cohort

We attract diverse and talented PhD students through transparent, competitive selection processes.

Tailored training program

We offer lectures, seminars, and complementary skills development to prepare students for both academic and non-academic careers. We are focused on opening such resources to different institutions across Austria.

Monitoring structures and research stays

We are establishing individualized thesis advisory committees to monitor progress and address challenges. We facilitate short- and long-term secondments to international institutions, fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Community building

We are creating a network of young scientists that fosters research exchange and social interactions. We are organizing regular meetings such as summer schools and retreats. We are establishing mentoring programs to help early-stage PhD candidates.

Soft Skills Development

We are integrating training in communication, presentation, and research skills to prepare students for academic and industry careers.

Transition support and fellowships

We have established a quantA Fellows program for early postdocs, which allows them to establish themselves as researchers.

Mentoring and guidance

We provide guidance for early postdocs in choosing research questions, grant writing, and project management. We are providing assistance to junior faculty members in setting up research groups and obtaining excellence awards (e.g. ERC Starting Grant).

Career advancement

We are organizing trainings in leadership, supervision, and group management for both junior faculty and postdocs. For junior faculty, we provide additional support for hiring, including PhD student recruitment.

Teaching and outreach

We are supporting innovative teaching and outreach by providing didactic material and resources for designing and organizing outreach events.

Relocation and care assistance

We provide assistance with and allowances for care responsibilities for junior faculty, along with assistance in moving to Austria.
