23rd international Winterschool on new developments in solid state physics – Mauterndorf 2025

Nobel laureates, groundbreaking research, and the stunning Austrian Alps – quantA was part of the Winter School, which brought together top physicists and focused on quantum science.

From February 9 to 14, 2025, physicists from around the world gathered once again at the Castle of Mauterndorf, Austria, for the 23rd International Winterschool on New Developments in Solid State Physics. This prestigious event, held in a unique alpine setting, has been a tradition since 1980, bringing together experts, early-career researchers, and students for a week of cutting-edge science, stimulating discussions, and a strong sense of community.

Highlights of Winterschool 2025

Nobel Laureates in Attendance

This year’s Winterschool was particularly special as we had the honor of welcoming two Nobel Prize-winning physicists

  • Prof. Klaus von Klitzing (MPI Stuttgart), known for his discovery of the quantum Hall effect.
  • Prof. Andre Geim (University of Manchester), awarded for his groundbreaking work on graphene.

Their lectures provided fascinating insights into fundamental quantum phenomena and the latest developments in materials research.

Strong presence of quantum science

With 2025 recognized as the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, quantum research took center stage at this year's Winterschool. Prominent talks covered qubits, quantum dots, topological materials, and quantum simulation, highlighting recent breakthroughs in the field.

Among the distinguished speakers were Markus Aspelmeyer (University of Vienna) and Francesca Ferlaino (University of Innsbruck), both leading researchers within the quantA initiative. Their presentations explored key advancements in quantum optics and ultracold atomic physics, demonstrating the exciting frontiers of quantum many-body research.

Engaging poster session

The poster session, featuring around 140 contributions, was a key moment for young researchers to showcase their work and exchange ideas. We were proud that quantA was also represented with a dedicated poster presentation, highlighting the latest advances from the Austrian quantum research community.

A unique blend of science and tradition

Beyond the academic program, the Winterschool retained its legendary spirit. The ski race, held at Grosseck’s middle station, once again provided a fun and competitive break from scientific discussions. The closing banquet at the historic castle was a perfect setting to celebrate another successful edition.

Looking ahead

The next Winterschool in Mauterndorf will take place in 2027, continuing its tradition of fostering scientific exchange in an unparalleled setting.

We extend our gratitude to all speakers, participants, stakeholders and organizers (Institute of Semiconductor and Solid State Physics of the Johannes Kepler University Linz) for making Winterschool 2025 such a memorable event. Until next time in Mauterndorf!
